Predictions of 2023 Hurricane Season

The 2023 hurricane season has started and will last six months. The season will run from June 1 to November 30, and the National Weather Service has predicted a "near normal" hurricane season this year.

The NOAA has predicted 12 to 17 storms this season; around six are anticipated to become hurricanes. Of those six hurricanes, 1 to 4 can become category 3 to 5.

"NOAA is forecasting a range of 12 to 17 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 5 to 9 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 1 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4, or 5, with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA has a 70% confidence in these ranges," NOAA said

According to the NOAA, the 2023 hurricane season is being reported as less active than in past years. It will be less active because this year has a high potential for El Niño or Southern Oscillation. El Niño can potentially lessen the number of hurricanes in the Atlantic but could create monsoons if specific weather conditions are met.

"El Nino's potential influence on storm development could be offset by favorable conditions local to the tropical Atlantic Basin," NOAA said, "Those conditions include the potential for an above-normal west African monsoon, which produces African easterly waves and seeds some of the stronger and longer-lived Atlantic storms, and warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea which creates more energy to fuel storm development."

Everyone residing in hurricane areas should prepare for the possibility that El Niño favors conditions that cause unfavorable weather conditions. The first thing to do is have a hurricane emergency kit fully stocked and ready for use if a hurricane goes through your area. The NOAA strongly suggests people get to know their areas in case there is an evacuation.

"As the season gets underway, emergency managers are pleading with residents to heed calls to evacuate if a storm is approaching and follow the advice of local officials," Russell Lewis said

People should also review their insurance policies to see if they cover flooding, hurricane, storm surges, etc. According to Eric Rosenberg, State Farm is the best hurricane insurance provider.

"We chose State Farm as the best overall hurricane insurance provider due to its wide network of agents in most hurricane-prone states, strong financial position, and long history of helping customers navigate the post-hurricane experience," Rosenberg said

In preparation for the 2023 hurricane season, the NOAA has already named this year's possible storms and hurricanes.
