Memorial Day Shooting

Hollywood Police Department has multiple people in custody for a memorial day shooting near Johnson St. Nine people were injured and taken to Memorial Regional Hospital or Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.

According to the Public Information Manager of the Hollywood Police Department, Deanna Bettineschi, the shooting resulted from an altercation between two groups. There is no other information about the argument, but the police were able to get to the scene quickly because the tourist spot was packed with police cars for the Memorial weekend.

"Police and witnesses said the shooting began as a group of people fought in front of a busy stretch of shops on the Hollywood Oceanfront Broadwalk about 7 p.m. Monday," Associated Press and Terry Spencer said.

The suspects were caught with five handguns, with at least two stolen. One of the stolen handguns was from Texas, and the other was from Miami-Dade County.

"Two people involved in the altercation that led to the shooting — Morgan Deslouches and Keshawn Stewart, both 18 — have been arrested on firearms charges, police said. Five handguns have been recovered, with one reported stolen in the Miami area and another in Texas," Spencer said.

Florida has become one of the top 10 states with the most mass shootings in the United States. Gun violence in Florida is due to the lenient gun laws the state has passed. In April, Governor DeSantis signed House Bill 543, allowing people who own guns to carry weapons without a permit. This law gives more leniency to the second amendment, which could cause more problems with mass shootings than solving them.

"Only time will tell where we will ultimately end up, but for now, come July 1, 2023, a permit will no longer be required for the concealed carry of firearms in Florida," said Alan Gassman

There were various eyewitness accounts of the shooting, some from tourists and others from residents. Most of the people present at the shooting had to hide behind trees, stores, hotels, etc. The safety of the people was affected on memorial day when the suspects resulted in their altercation in a shootout.

"I am deeply saddened and angered by the Memorial Day shooting in our city that resulted in injuries to innocent bystanders. Our thoughts go out to the victims and their families during this difficult time, and our prayers for a speedy recovery," Mayor Josh Levy said.

Seven of the nine people injured in the memorial day shooting are released from the hospital, while the rest are in stable condition. The Hollywood Police Department is still investigating the shooting and already has most of the suspects in custody.
