Disney has come a long way with the representation of LGBTQ characters in their films and shows. Representation for the LGBTQ started in the old films with characters like Ursula from The Little Mermaid. Unfortunately, most of the LGBTQ characters or queer coding were seen in the Disney villains. Over the years Disney has created “better” characters to represent the LGBTQ community. There have been movies and even shows that give LGBTQ characters more of a part in the story. In January of 2020, Disney released a show created by Dana Terrace with their first ever bisexual main character; this show is called The Owl House.
The Owl House is a fantastic show. Most of the cast in the series is part of the LGBTQ community and the storyline is different compared to other Disney shows. Recently Disney shows have decreased the quality of their storylines. The only times Disney shows, or films have any remnant of an interesting plot line is when Disney adds an over exaggerated conflict within the characters. The Owl House just has the storyline old Disney shows had, with a touch of its own magic and mystery.
This show had many viewers because it is a mix of Harry Potter, Gravity Falls, Percy Jackson, etc. The series has a mix of so many great elements from different series and films that make the show great. The Owl House has such a complex storyline while teaching kids great lessons about problem solving, trusting others, and being vulnerable. Owl House shows kids how different healthy and unhealthy relationships work.
Dana Terrace was never afraid to show the character's vulnerable side to the audience. It really makes the show better to see characters go through grief, acceptance, betrayal, etc. Owl House shows kids the many complex emotions people can have in the real world and that it’s fine to express emotions.
It is great to have a show where children can see different characters in the LGBTQ community like a Latinx Bisexual character. Terrace and her team created a show with queer characters when other Disney shows weren’t allowed. Terrace got a lot of push backs for creating queer characters, but a lot of viewers are glad she fought for her characters. Having representation for the LGBTQ community really brings the show to the number one spot. It is like Terrace is showing kids the norm in society.
Even with how great the show is and the many viewers it gets, it is getting canceled. Disney announced that they are canceling Owl House and Season three is shortened to three episodes. Terrace said that shortening the series will change how the storyline goes for the characters. According to Terrace, she wrote on Reddit that Disney is canceling because Owl House does not fit the Disney brand anymore.
Disney’s brand is about showing audiences family friendly content while inspiring children to do positive things. Supposedly Owl House can be considered a “scary” show because the island is the body of a titan, but that’s what makes the show different and great at the same time. I think the show follows the brand; it is one of the only Disney shows with great LGBTQ representation and a great storyline for kids to watch.
The excuse used to cancel Owl House is not valid. The show is being canceled because the series shows LGBTQ relationships. This thought was cemented more when in the first episode of season three showed more relationship scenes between the two main queer characters. It was like Terrace was serving a little revenge to the people at Disney. Hopefully the final episodes aren’t as different as what Terrace originally wanted to create because the show is too important for the LGBTQ community and for children to mess up.
