Chat GPT Controversy in Education

Artificial Intelligence is used constantly in different settings. Most recently doctors and nurses have used AI to speak to patients, but the most concerning area in the usage of AI is education.

Any AI website or tool like ChatGPT has caused a controversy in the usage of said tool in the classroom. Some college students have been expelled from their universities because they used AI to turn in assignments.

"ChatGPT's unauthorized use, like that of other chatbots or artificial intelligence software, would be considered a form of cheating under our assessment regulations," A spokesperson for the University of Bristol said.

ChatGPT creates essays, songs, any topic of homework and the answers keep changing. It is harder for colleges to detect the usage of AI because the tool changes its answer every time, even with the same phrased question. The student population is divided on whether the usage of ChatGPT is plagiarism while faculty at universities have already decided.

“In a new BestColleges survey of 1,000 current undergraduate and graduate students, just over half of students (51%) agree that using AI tools to complete assignments and exams counts as cheating or plagiarism. Two in ten (20%) disagree, and the rest are neutral,” Lyss Welding said.

While there are K-12 public schools, universities are allowing professors to decide whether students can use the AI tool. According to Welding, about 31% of students know about their university's rules about the use of AI tools. Professors at universities have been open about their policies towards the use of ChatGPT on assignments. Some educators are against the use of the tool while others believe that the use of the tool allows students to learn more.

“While some professors like Ethan Mollick at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School are requiring students to use the tool in class, others are now requiring students to take in-person assessments, like Adam Purtee, assistant professor of computer science at the University of Rochester,” Chloe Appleby said.

AI tools allow students to do more extensive research on their essays to check accuracy of the tool. Since the answers to questions given to the AI can change, research helps students study more on the topic for more accurate information. The tool also lets students get feedback for their work and a decent editor. While there are decent advantages, there are plenty of disadvantages to using AI. The AI uses the language and grammar of a middle schooler and the feedback lacks a human element according to Robin T. Greene-Harper. Since ChatGPT collects information from the internet and compiles, it can copy and paste texts from other works to write student’s assignments. The disadvantages to using AI can help universities with detecting if a student has used AI.

“Another limitation is the potential for decreased engagement and motivation among learners when interacting with a machine instead of a human. The lack of real-time feedback and interaction may lead to a sense of isolation or disconnection from the learning process,” Greene-Harper said.

The use of AI tools in classrooms has rattled schools, any use of AI is cause for expulsion at universities as it is considered plagiarism.
